Product detailed description
Farmer Shreedev and his wife Sushmita manage three family-owned coffee farms - Chinnenahalli, Hulikere and Woodway. The family has been involved in coffee farming for three generations, and the Chinnenahalli farm is their home.
Woodway Estate, a plantation established by the British in the 1880s, is one of the few coffee farms in the world to have earned Wildlife Friendly certification.
The farms are located in the Baba Budan Giri Hills growing region in India's Western Ghats. The Western Ghats in India is one of the world’s eight 'hottest hotspots' of biological diversity and is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This mountain range stretches along the west coast of India. Many South Indian rivers originate in these mountains.
Coffee on the local farms is grown in traditional polyculture shaded land with a high density and diversity of native and endemic species of shade trees, which support a wide range of birds, butterflies and mammals. The plantations are home to, among other things, endemic birds such as the Nilgiri woodpecker, Blyth's starling, Malabar parakeet, as well as vulnerable mammals such as the sambar or flying squirrel and many others.
The plantations are located approximately 5 km south of the Bhadra Tiger Reserve, which is a significant national park and home to a variety of wildlife, including tigers, leopards, elephants and gaur.
