WHAT IS RDT?

RDT in the coffee industry is an abbreviation for “Ross Droplet Technique”.
RDT is a method used in grinding coffee beans, in which a small amount of water is sprayed onto the surface of the beans before grinding. This technique helps to eliminate static electricity, thereby improving grinding efficiency and the consistency of the ground coffee.
The RDT technique was invented by Australian barista Ross Quail. By applying a fine mist of water to the beans, static electricity is reduced, allowing for smoother grinding. This process minimises coffee dust and uneven particle sizes, ultimately increasing the efficiency and quality of the extraction.
To perform RDT, place the coffee beans in a container and spray a small amount of water evenly over them. Stir gently to ensure even distribution, and then wait for the surface moisture to evaporate before grinding.
It is important to control the amount of water used – excessive moisture can affect the taste and quality of the coffee. Furthermore, RDT is particularly suitable for grinders with flat burrs or blades and is not recommended for grinders with conical burrs.
